Leaders of the Week
Ice Hockey - 2006-2007
Anna Jekel - Newton North High School
01.21.08 - 01.27.08
STATISTICS/HONORS: As a Senior, in 3 games this past week, Jekel has 6 goals and 3 assists, making her one of the leading goal scorers on the team.
SPECIAL QUALITIES: "Anna leads by example and has been a great team captain so far this season. This is important for Newton North because we are a very young team this year. Anna is a very unselfish player always giving 100%."
-Karen McCabe, Head Coach Girls Ice Hockey - Newton North
Hannah Weldon - Braintree High School
01.28.08 - 02.03.08
STATISTICS/HONORS: Senior Team Captian; Early acceptance to Elmira College, NY
SPECIAL QUALITIES: "A true leader. Not my best player on ice, but Hannah shows tremenous leadership qualities off the ice. She helps the (male) coaches to understand the girls' attitudes and reports the pulse of the team. She takes it upon herself to speak to all players in regards to effort and team commitment. Hannah displays confidence and independence while speaking to individuals."
-Kevin Burchill, Head Coach Girls Ice Hockey - Braintree High School
Katelynn Penza - Norwood High School
02.04.08 - 02.10.08
STATISTICS/HONORS: 17 goals and 6 assists for a total of 23 points
SPECIAL QUALITIES: "Up to this point in the season Katelynn Penza currently leads the team in scoring with 17 goals and 6 assists. It's the type of season where the team has to work extremely hard for every score it gets. More importantly there are only two seniors on the Norwood High Mustangs this year. Katelynn and the other senior co-captain have been great leaders on the team. The inexperience of the team does not always translate into success on the scoreboard. Despite that fact, Katelynn has been working to keep the season positive for her teammates and all associated with the program. Katelynn works hard and tries to lead by example. It is easier to be a leader when the team is winning and everything is going smoothly. The character of Katelynn along with the other senior co-captain has been tested during a season which from a win-loss standpoint is not what is desired. For these reasons and others, I wanted to nominate Katelynn Penza of the Norwood High Mustangs more for what she has been doing as captain than any particular game she has excelled."
-Bill O'Donnell, Head Coach Girls Ice Hockey - Norwood High School
Kelly Losi - Milton High School
02.11.08 - 02.17.08
STATISTICS/HONORS: 7 goals and 11 assists in 16 games
SPECIAL QUALITIES: “On a team with the two top scorers in the Bay State League, it’s easy to see how other quality players can be overshadowed. But, throughout her high school career Kelly has proven herself to be a dedicated and hard working team player. She’s both physically and mentally tough and always gives 100%. She is a great skater and passer and could easily play on our first line. But, to give the team depth her skills are better utilized with her centering the second line. Her dedication, high skill level and unselfish nature make her a true unsung hero. Kelly always has a smile on her face and an upbeat attitude. She is a great leader and I feel fortunate to have her as a captain this season.”
- Coach Christine Gurskis
Milton Girls Varsity Ice Hockey
Gillian Nolan - Dedham High School
02.18.08 - 02.24.08
SPECIAL QUALITIES: “Gillian is a great team player. She’s also a member of the National Honor Society and she was a member of the 2005 State Champion Ice Hockey Team.”
- Coach Joseph Huff
